This guide sets out to explain the law applicable to disputes between property owners as to their shares, and entitlements to a property held either jointly or in the name of one owner.

Those living together without marrying and who, during the course of their relationship, have bought a property together, will often be in dispute over their entitlements to the property should their relationship breaks down. There may have been unequal contribution to the purchase or maintenance of a property which is held in equal shares between the parties. Otherwise, the property may have been bought in the name of one of the partners, but the other has made a contribution either in money or by working on the property.

This guide looks at how the law deals with such situations and when an order varying the beneficial interests may be made.
